World Hunger - What does it mean to be stricken by poverty?
In the world of modernization, human civilization has changed. Life has change through whatever technology has
invented. Our world is like living in the world of hypnotism. These days’ people are still hoping for the betterment of
living where selfishness and greediness has no place. Where people are fighting, competing and killing.
There is a crucial need to raise awareness of the need for world peace. No matter where we live, we are all connected
in one way or the other. We are all affected of the action of one nation. So when there is war, it is not only between two
countries, but the entire world itself is affected and can even suffer the consequence of such war. These problems have been increasing from each generation.
The way of survival has its own way to its end, where people have to fight and win against all elements of selfishness
and greediness. Until the time of chaos for survival which affects the world. In this life’s struggle, man has to be more intelligent and wise for the competition of survival has to come.
We need to make every effort to free our fellow men, women and children from the abject and dehumanizing conditions
of extreme poverty. We are fully aware of the facts about poverty and how it affects children in need and their families. Anyone who has struggled with poverty knows how it is to be poor. Poverty is the worst problem our planet faces. All
of this has something to do with “GLOBAL CRISIS.” One thing I hope we can all agree on: It is a disgrace that in the
21st century real poverty, famine, malnutrition and lack of medical care still exist on earth.
Facts about hunger and poverty.
Aiming at the very heart of hunger, children die every day in non-Western countries of diseases such as pneumonia,
diarrhoea, measles and malaria. Poverty statistics say that a figure of around 27 000 children die per day of hunger,
870 million people do not have enough to eat, and 98% of the world's undernourished people live in developing countries. The population is struggling to survive and the statistics is scaling higher each day.
These figures are mind blowing when you think about it. Innocent people dying of hunger are something that many
people cannot wrap their minds around the concept. Despite that there are so many charities, food for the poor
programs, and so much help that is being sent overseas, this problem continues to exist. Hunger seems to be tied to poverty, and to combat one you have to combat the other.
Many of these deaths are caused by the simple absence of clean water and effective sewage systems. In other words,
the needs for basic facilities are completely none. These families and children, that go unclothed and unfed, elderly
that go unattended, and a state of general hopelessness becomes heart stricken and overwhelming for them. Many of these families can’t just get by for the most part, displaced people in poverty has no homes, roof over their heads,
food on the table, a comfort bed and no means of survival. They are left to fend for themselves and to parish a
demeaning and tragic death of starvation.
What does it mean to be poor across the world?
It means different things in different countries depending on the definition of the poverty line-an income threshold
below which families are considered poor. Poverty in the world still exists today as millions of people suffer from hunger and hunger related causes. There are many countries around the world that suffer from poverty, which ultimately lead to severe sickness and even death.
In this world, there are many degrees of poverty, and many of us will never comprehend why in this day and age,
poverty and hunger are still around, even in our backyards in countries that are well-developed. There are many
people going to bed hungry every day, and some are even lucky if they have a bed.
Poverty is the lack of basic human needs, such as nutrition, clothing, shelter, health care and education because
of the inability to afford them. This is also referred to as absolute poverty or destitution. Cultural poverty is the lack of coming together in a society, disconnection between people.
How do people care when they are so hungry that their main focus is to find something to eat? This is the reason
that these three issues poverty, hunger and education go hand in hand along with the many programs in place.
For these programs to be effective, these three issues have to be tackled together. Otherwise, we are just going in
circles and we will not be able to fight hunger and poverty, make food insecurity disappear at last, and have the
most effective food for the poor programs in place.
It is time to lend a hand to life; the greatest gift of all. Life is precious and should not be taken for granted. The world
is hurting and needs for us to cooperate and work together to make it a better place. There are countries that
have impoverished people and cannot help the poor. Many of us waste food like nobody’s business, and yet there
are poor people who scavenge for food to fill their hunger in other parts of the world. We all need to heal the world
in order for it to be a beautiful and better place to live in.
How to help the less fortunate and the displaced people?
First, I have a question. Have you ever been told the smallest things in life are the ones that count the most?
There are a variety of ways that we can help families and children, who are less fortunate, displaced or are currently experiencing hardship. If community organizations or your family can come together, these families can get the help
that they need and begin to overcome their hardships.
Some of these include the work that is done by different ministries. These ministries that are devoted to helping the
less fortunate do many different things to help ensure a higher quality of life for those in needs. An effective way is
by making donations and creating charitable organizations that help people fight these very issues. Contact an organization. There are countless organizations dedicated to helping less fortunate people all over the world.
Just do a little research.
What you can do is to volunteer your services.
Sometimes helping the less fortunate and displaced people can be as simple as donating unwanted items to families
in need or even purchasing food and meals for them. Perhaps, have others bring in canned food items or
non-perishable items and donate the food to various areas of food pantries or shelters. In addition items such as
soaps, scented sprays, small gifts for children, books or whatever you choose to make it special, could be dropped off
at a toys for tots drop-off locations would be greatly appreciated. You do not need to purchase an expensive toy to
help put a smile on a child’s face.
In the winter, many families cannot afford coats for their young children or themselves. Begin collecting coats in the
early fall. Have an open time where families can come in and pick out clothing’s.
Life is short. Helping others fills our souls and being charitable to the less fortunate and displaced people is the
greatest gift, we can share and extend to those that needs our help to survive.
Are people morally obligated to help the less fortunate?
I strongly believe, we as decent and compassionate human beings can voluntarily extend a hand to help another,
so long as it is our choice to do so. Sometimes we just have to do what's right regardless of how we personally feel
about it, because we never know, if we will be in that same situation and you will be seeking help.
A picture speaks a thousand words. Look into the eyes of the less fortunate; see their fears, pain and sorrow and
truly understand their poor predicaments. Never look down on anyone simply because they are less fortunate than
you. Who are we to judge the less fortunate or poverty stricken humans. I've been there and have been fortunate
that I was able to get out of the situation.
We all know too well that Mother Nature has her strength, and power to make our lives either comfortable or
devastating. Mother Nature has her way, as we see her destroy families, homes that once were yours. We can in
an instant be a statistic of being one of the less fortunate. Never say never for it can happen to you as well.
We live in the society that only advanced after we adopted disciplined beliefs in helping others. If we did not,
we would decay, ruined by personal rivalry and obsession about our own well-being. Imagine where your kids
would be, if you never took care of them. Those that can't help themselves can receive help and in turn, that can
empower them to help others, and so everyone standing and livelihood improves. It is a process of “paying forward”
or giving back to society.
Humans are full of weaknesses (every one of us) and also dependent on some degree of luck, no matter how smart
and perfect a person is, there is always a chance of getting into an unlucky situation, where he or she can't do without
help. We must help each other and also ourselves to survive better. Unity is strength. As for the less fortunate, when pushed to the limits, they deserve help. Nobody deserves to suffer unnecessarily at the hands of cruel fate.
We ask ourselves, it is our responsibility to help the less fortunate and others who suffer extreme poverty?
It should be a moral responsibility of an individual to help the needy and the unfortunate. Yes, I agree we are all
morally obligated to help the less fortunate, because poverty affects everyone on some level.
It is my humble believe that we should help others! No matter whom it is we all need to help our community and
others who may need help, even if they are from a distant shore. Regardless of our religious beliefs or morals,
it is human nature to help the less fortunate. It is something that we subconsciously want and need to do!
We all came into this world with NOTHING and will leave the same, whatever it is? We can't take it with us.
It’s so true and it’s not complicated at all. However the things that we are bless with in this life are to be a blessing
with, and it is then that is becomes of it true value.
If you can afford it and it doesn't negatively affect your life, then why not? Whether you donate one time or occasionally
for the rest of your life, you are doing something that helps the life of another person, perhaps a child who did not
choose to be born into poverty. Think about it.
In our open society, we are inclined to give to the less fortunate for the pure goodness of giving. Let’s be honest,
deep down most of us feel it. I know I do. Some of us open our home to those who are alone during the holidays to
spread some warmth into the life of another.
It doesn't really the matter of how materially we give but instead, it's the matter of praying for them to be strong
enough in standing and not losing hope in living their lives. And on how willing your heart is to serve and help others because those less fortunate need us both spiritually and materially. Thus, this matter will definitely inspire and
strengthen them and do something with their situation. One thing for certain is that they will know that they are not
alone for there are compassionate people who will make a difference in their lives. It’s the ONLY hope that they have
to cling on to their last straw.
This is a sensitive question. What if it was you? Put yourself in their shoes. What if nobody helped you, when you
needed it the most? What if it was a member of your family or someone whom you care about?
Some people in the world are born into poverty or the less-fortunate side of the community. I believe that it is "just"
and "moral" to help others who are less fortunate than us, because some have a worse or better chance of having a
successful and prosperous life. Even over national borders, it should not oblige, be morally right to help others in third-world countries, like Africa or India.
As citizens of the world, we are supposed to bring one another up, and by doing so we should help one another.
It would be counterproductive to leave our peers or destitute people in the rubble while we glamorize our lives.
Morals or not it doesn't take much to hold out a hand. Do what you can for someone and don't take too much time to question, if they are less fortunate than you. Don't pick and choose who to help, that is the morality of helping.
Those less fortunate than us need our help and our understanding. What separate us from animals are our
conscience and our ability to know the difference between right and wrong. We also have compassion. The fact
that we possess these qualities demonstrates our need to exercise them for the good of, and for the continuation
of the human race. To turn a blind eye to those we see who are suffering is to be morally bankrupt and disengaged
from the sufferings of the human race.
I believe in helping those who are less fortunate; people should be able to depend on the kindness of others.
Helping others who are less fortunate is just the right thing to do. If we cannot depend on those who are able to help,
who can we depend on?
It is very important for the prosperous people in society to help the underprivileged. If the people in a locality care
for others then certainly there would be less fear, hunger, reservations in society. It is the moral duty of all of us to
help the less fortunate.
Being a human being, everyone has a right to have basic human rights. Some people have misfortune and end up in conditions which at times, seem to be out of their control; hence it becomes our moral responsibility to help the
unfortunate on humanitarian grounds.
Morality means conforming to a standard of good and right behaviour. I believe that helping the less fortunate is good
and right behaviour. Since we're talking about morality, I will quote the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. That does not seem like a very high standard for good and right behaviour. I would be pretty cold-hearted, if I ignored those who truly needed my help. But that’s not me and it is my humble nature to help others in need.
Mankind is all in it together. We are a small world, and we are all in this together. Helping the less fortunate helps us.
By helping the less fortunate we make ourselves safer and better off. Karma exists, and it is true that when you help
others, good things come back to us. Also, some day, we may become less fortunate and if we have helped others,
it is more likely that we will be helped.
I strongly agree that by helping less fortunate will make the world a better place for unlucky people and help them out
with their situation. If you do not believe in a higher power such as God, then your morals do not tell you that you should
help, because the person in need means nothing to you.
Think about it, take away money and religion and what exactly do you think you'll have? You will have people helping
other people in order to survive. I think we as a human race, have an obligation to help out our fellow human beings
in all aspects and areas of life, regardless of social standing or what is deemed acceptable by today's morbid, and
warped way of thinking kind of society, as every man for himself.
That type of thinking is only fuelled by greed and the way our society has become. There is still much we as a people
can do to help elevate each other to a place, where greed and status quo doesn't matter anymore, what matters is each other, our planet and our future!
We should help if we are able. If we have the means to help those in hunger or impoverished without having to make
large sacrifices in our own lives, then we should. Just help and let God figure out the rest. Lastly, helping the poor is an option in the exercise of your faith.
